Hi all, just a short post. I was reading this article that says that 40% of your article content is never read, because people only read the first 60%. Other interesting takeaways from this article:
- 10% of people don’t scroll through your article at all!!
- Most vistors only read through 60% of your article
- people will scroll through the entire post if it has pictures and videos
- 2/3 of the time people spend on a page, it is below the fold (now this conflicts with the 40%, doesn’t it?
So what does this all mean?
Your Content Needs To Target Your Loyal Followers
Now I am basing this all on the experiments that the article is accurate… but I would say that if most people only read the top 40%, then it is only the loyalists that are reading the entire article. More importantly, I would say that if they are spending 2/3 of their time below the fold, that means they are reading through the comments of your article. Takeaway: MAKE SURE YOU ARE RESPONDING TO COMMENTS!! If the community your build is taking the time to comment, and read comments, shouldn’t you at least have the courtesy to respond to the comments?
I can’t tell you how many blogs I read where the author will reply to the first 10-15 comments, but then ignore the rest. Why??? Do those people not matter anymore? Do they just consider those comments spam?
Do you care if people respond to your comments?
The other takeaway is making sure that the major topic you want to discuss is in the first 60%, and leave your secondary comments below. That means you need to have a good headline, and hit them with your main message early. It also means that you should find a way to reward your loyal readers with a juicy tip or something cool at the end.
